The Seven Factors of Awakening
The path to awakening in Buddhism is often described as a journey of cultivating inner wealth. Unlike material riches, this wealth lies in the development of mental qualities that lead to lasting peace and liberation.
Among these treasures, the SAPTABODHYAṄGA — सप्तबोध्यङ्ग or SEVEN FACTORS OF AWAKENING have a central place. These seven factors are powerful tools that, when honed through practice by the practitioners, illuminate the path to enlightenment.
THE SEVEN FACTORS: CULTIVATING A BALANCED MIND
These are the Seven Factors, with their Pali and Sanskrit names. I have also added for each of them a suggestion on how to practice it.
- Mindfulness (Sati, स्मृति — Smṛti): This is the real foundation of all awakening factors, and it represents the clear and present observation of the arising and passing away of mental and physical phenomena. It’s not just about focusing; it’s about observing with a gentle and non-judgmental awareness. By cultivating mindfulness, we become aware of unhelpful mental patterns and see reality more clearly.
Practice: Throughout the day, bring your attention to the present moment. Notice your breath, bodily sensations, thoughts, and emotions without clinging to them. You can practice mindfulness in any activity, from walking to eating.
